UML for MOU (or UML Tool RFC)
Well I spent my first full day working on design... and it was fun, even though I suspect I did most everything wrong in my UML diagrams.
I'm curious to know which UML tools people out there use... leave comments as to which and why if you feel so inclined. I know which ones I like so far for My Own Use (in case y'all were wondering what that other acronym was), but since I'm fairly new to UML in general, I'm not even sure I know what criteria to use in selecting a tool!
I downloaded the eval copy of Together from Borland at Sean's suggestion, and it's great... but it's HUGE. Since, at this point, Together doesn't support the creation of CFCs from models, it strikes me as a bit of overkill to use it simply to do use cases, sequences, and class diagrams. Plus it costs $3500. If I struggle to afford the StudioMX suite for $1000, I'm sure as hell going to think long and hard about using something 3.5 times costlier when I can only use about 3% of it's feature set.
On the other hand, there's Argo. It's based on UML 1.3 (1.4 is the current spec and the 2.0 spec is stabilized... more on that in another entry), the interface is slightly unstable, and there's some variances from standard GUIs when it comes to connecting lines to boxes and stick men. But, it does UML Diagrams. Wow, a purposed package that's only built to serve it's purpose. Plus is has a few cool features like the Checklist pane that gets you to think about common mistakes in your models and fix them before they become an issue. Plus it's free. Kinda hard to complain there.
Poseidon, which is Argo's big brother, is MUCH nicer in the interface, but there are some control issues over UML diagram elements... such as the sequence diagrams. It's all drag-and-drop, but control over the layout is fairly minimal. Elements go on your sequence diagrams where it decides to put them (it will let you arrange them enough to make it make sense, but as compared to something like Together... aka Quark XPress for UML... it just ain't the same).
Gentleware, Poseidon's owner and keeper (has anyone told Zuess about that, btw?), is fairly community-minded, apparently, because they provide a freeware, fully-maintained base version of Poseidon which they call Community Edition. The caveat: Not For Commercial Use. Which isn't all that big a deal when you notice they have a commercial version for $189. Not bad compared to $3500 for basically the same functionality.
And then there's everyone's favorite... VISIO! Yay! Microsoft wants to run your home, office, and central nervous system. I have used Visio for many jobs over the years, and it's a pretty decent little tool. Correction: it WAS a pretty decent little tool when Visio owned and maintained it. Since then it's become a dead armadillo... bloaded, smelly, and worthless.
(Yes, I know, there's Rational Rose. However, I know nothing about Rational Rose, other than the US Postal Service quit using it because developers looking for patches constantly tripped their web proxy's content filters... go figure.)
So, for now, I'm going to be working in parallel between Poseidon and Together, trying to see which one suits me better for my UML projects. Until my Together eval runs out... at which point, unless I've won the lottery, it'll be Poseidon till I'm rich enough to pay for commercial applications that do more than I need them to just because it's fun.
Err, no! I meant "...until I'm well-networked enough to have my corporate partners provide my software needs in exchange for representation to my customer base."
I like that much better.

In reference to the Together products, there is now a free version which should cover really all you'll need to do basic UML modeling. You don't need to spend $3500!!

I just downloaded and tried out a bunch of UML tools this week (the coincidence with all this UML talk going on lately is eerie!) and have come to settle on Visual Paradigm for UML as my so-far favorite. You can grab the Community Edition at http://www.visual-paradigm.com/vpuml.php and they also have a number of commercial editions geared at a range of development levels. My criteria for choosing? 1) It must run on OS X, this basically means a Java app, 2) It had to have acceptable performance, and 3) It had to be reasonably bloat-free.
VPUML is, I believe, a Cocoa based Java app, which means it performs better than, say, MagicDraw or ArgoUML by a noticeable amount, but it's still a bit sluggish. Still, it works well enough to be useful. There are a bunch of functions in it that I don't, and possibly never will, use, but it has good diagram tools, and was pretty easy to jump in and get started right away. Visual Paradigm also has something called SDE, which is a suite of CASE tools that integrate with several IDE's, including Eclipse. But it requires JDK 1.5, so us poor OS X users have to wait for Tiger before we can use it. (Note: I haven't really tried OmondoUML for Eclipse because it only works with Java projects.)
I am going to try the free version of Together, but unless it's remarkably faster (and has a smaller footprint) than VPUML, I doubt I'll switch - I'm just learning UML, after all. I would like to try QuickUML, but the demo costs $50, and I also haven't tried ConceptDraw yet, but again, there's no free version, so that's automatically over my budget (which is $0.) :)
FYI... If you are using Poseidon, I have created a set of custom templates that will generate CFC's from your classes. Note that these templates require Poseidon Professional. You can download the template package at http://cfcxmi.tigris.org
I am looking through different UML editors too, and I stopped between Poseidon and VP-UML as well. I really miss XMI import/export functions in VP-UML, but I really like it's design. Yeah, you can have XMI stuff in Standard version, but I am looking more into Free/Community editions at the moment.
