OOPs... I did it again!
Like I said in my first post, I've been delving deeper into OOP lately. The concept of frameworks (i.e. FuseBox, BlackBox, and MachII) caught my attention (finally) after 5 years as a CF developer as a result of being on the CF-Talk mailinglist at houseoffusion.com and being exposed to the likes of Sean Corfield, Director of Architecture at Macromedia.
I began a journey, about a week ago, diving into OOP concepts, reading the MachII development guide on Macromedia's LiveDocs (written and maintained by Sean), reading thru code in the MachII core files, and culminating in a grand expedition surveying the Land of UML. It was... exhausting and scary. I'm used to being something of a subject matter expert on most of CF, and being able to develop cool stuff pretty quickly. In this case, I was a n00b and I knew it. And I hated it.
So, yesterday was UML day. I'd heard of it, read a bit about it, but didn't know what it really was or how it worked. I started googling for all things UML about 8:30AM CST yesterday morning and was still reading at 3:00AM this morning. Long day. And I felt like I'd never get my head around this stuff.
So, Sean and I were IMing last night while I was reading and amidst conversation about beer, cats, nation-states and online comics, I'd pop an occaisional UML or OOP question in there. He tolerated me, and generally answered me (unless I was trying to get him to design something FOR me, in which case, he quite nicely skirted the question... damned Jedis.) I finally came across a couple of URLs that provided key pieces of information I needed to conceptualize the difference between OOP and procedural development:

It was while I was reading Don's article on the Activity Diagram that I mentioned to Sean how it seemed more intuitive to start modelling with an Activity Diagram, translate that into Use Cases and then those into classes. He responded with 3 words that would suddenly, like an XSLT transform on a WDDX packet, completely remodel my understanding of the OOP paradigm:
Suddenly it all became clear, and I understood. The lights came on, people came home, someone made a pot of coffee and my braincells all gathered round to discuss OO design patterns. However, since this is becoming one of the longest blog entries in history, I'll leave my sudden realizations to another entry. Maybe later today.
I have Use Cases to create.
